New England Wire specializes in EKG patient cables, medical equipment cables and medical adaptor cables for a variety of different uses.

Medical Cables

Recognizing a growing need in the healthcare industry for a source for quality custom medical cables, New England Wire Technologies quickly established itself as a source for providing engineers and cable assembly manufacturers with quality custom medical cables for new and existing medical equipment, hospital equipment, dental equipment, and laboratory equipment. Our Technical Sales Teams are ready to assist OEM’s and cable assembly manufacturers in designing and specifying the proper wire for use in the production of patient monitoring cables and other apparatus. Typically, patient monitoring cables and medical equipment cables that utilize our wire and cable are the most flexible, comfortable, and reliable fixed-lead medical devices in the industry.

New England Wire Technologies’ custom medical cable capabilities include:

Ultra Flexible
If medical cable flexibility is a concern, fine wire stranding and flexible insulation materials will make even large medical equipment cables manageable.

High Flex Life
An extensive line of alloy conductors, matched with over 105 years of manufacturing specialty wire, allows us to design reliable pulse oximeter cables, patient monitoring cables, and medical cables that will outperform those of our competitors.

Autoclavable
Silicone Rubber cables and NEWtuf® reinforced Silicone Rubber cables are proven to withstand multiple autoclaving cycles.

Low-Noise
Small signal applications require special designs to ensure signal integrity. Our high-performance NEWtral® Low-Noise Medical Cables are specifically designed to eliminate problems with mechanically generated noise.

Low-Elongation/High-Tensile Strength Jackets
When cleaning a medical cable jacket, the wiping process can cause the highly flexible jacket to stretch. Our NEWtuf® Reinforced Silicone Rubber Jackets help eliminate this problem without sacrificing the benefit of high flexibility, a necessary attribute of Silicone Rubber cables used in electrosurgical and patient monitoring equipment.

Low-Kink
Using special manufacturing techniques, deterioration of the once aesthetically pleasing jackets on medical equipment cables can be prevented.

Miniaturization
Fine wire conductors and high-performance insulation materials allow for significant size reduction without sacrificing performance.

The Medical Electronics industry produces technically demanding designs and specifications for patient monitoring cables and medical equipment cables and new technologies are constantly emerging. Consequently, patient monitoring cables, electrosurgical device cables and other medical equipment cables are highly evolved products that must be engineered to provide reliable performance day-after-day in a variety of environments and be able to continue functioning properly after repeated exposures to sterilization processes, including autoclave, ETO, gamma, e-beam and disinfectants and sterilants. They must be flexible, yet able to endure a long life while maintaining their soft and pliable characteristics.

The term “Flex Life” refers to a custom medical cable’s ability to perform consistently after repeated cycles, often for millions of repetitions. Attributes such as friction co-efficiency, flex modulus, and elasticity are key for flexural endurance. The use of special tapes and laminates help to protect surfaces during flexing and extend a medical cable’s life. Also, the method of extruding used in jacketing custom medical cables can significantly impact their flexibility and flex life. Pressure, semi-pressure, and tube techniques can have a positive or negative effect on flexural properties of the final cable.

New England Wire Technologies answers these all of these challenges through constant attention to innovations and improvements to our wire technologies. We maintain tight quality control through a manufacturing process that incorporates “vertical integration” of all stages of custom medical cable production, from drawing our own wire and conductors, to braiding and shielding, to final extrusion and jacketing. Through our own engineering initiatives, we’ve introduced several state-of-the-art technological advancements to our medical cables, including:

  • NEWtuf® Reinforced Silicone Rubber Cable: Does your medical cable require high axial strength under extreme conditions like operating rooms and trauma centers? NEWtuf® custom cables deliver peak jacket strength three times that of conventional silicone rubber jacketed cables. They help eliminate damage from pulling and stretching, yet maintain their flexibility even after repeated exposure to high temperatures, solvent sterilization and autoclaving. While tougher than medical cables made with conventional silicone rubber, NEWtuf® jacketed cables can be easily stripped with standard equipment.
  • NEWcel® Foamed Dielectric: In nature, air is a near-perfect dielectric medium, allowing a signal to move through it at a rate approaching the speed of light, however, an air dielectric is impractical for use as a cable insulation as it provides no structural integrity. New England Wire Technologies’ engineers developed NEWcel®, a closed-cell foamed dielectric material specifically designed to reduce dielectric constant and dissipation factor yielding low-capacitance, low-loss, high V.O.P. ultra-miniature coaxial, triaxial, and twinaxial cables. Typical coaxial, triaxial, and twinaxial medical cables are manufactured using low dielectric constant (2.0-2.6) materials that possess better electrical properties than standard insulations such as PVC. NEWcel® utilizes a highly controlled extrusion process to produce dielectric mediums with a high concentration of air and significantly reduced dielectric constants (1.45 – 1.8) that approach the nearly ideal properties of air without sacrificing structural integrity. This results in a significant capacitance reduction while providing the medical equipment manufacturer with the choice of reduced diameter/same attenuation or same diameter/reduced attenuation.
  • NEWtral® Low Noise Cables: New England Wire Technologies creates cables specifically designed to neutralize noise generated by mechanical shock and vibration and maximize critical signal quality in small-signal applications. NEWtral® utilizes the addition of conductive low-noise layers to reduce the noise to the microvolt range. Our state-of-the-art low-noise cables can be found in a range of medical devices such as ECG, EEG, and pulse oximetry equipment, as well as test and measurement tools including charge amplifiers, vibration analyzers and oscilloscopes. New England Wire Technologies engineers can design custom cables to meet your performance requirements.
